Welcome to
the Green Door
Hi, I am
Mr. Mooney, and I have a variety of teaching experiences. I am the Green
Door Montessori Upper Elementary and Middle School Director. I began working at Bay
Montessori School in 2000 as the Blue Door Primary Director. In 2001 I
moved into the Brown and Grey Doors and became the Director of the Lower
Elementary. In 2004, Mrs. Mooney (The Red Door Primary Directress) and I
moved to Virginia, where I taught high school in a private religious
school, and Geometry at Culpeper High School. Mrs. Mooney and I moved
back to Maryland in 2007 and I again taught Lower Elementary in the
Brown and Grey Door classrooms. In 2008 I finished my Montessori Upper
Elementary Training and began teaching in the Green Door. I have a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Asian Studies, a Master of Arts from
the University of Tennessee and I have successfully completed the three
PRAXIS exams for teaching Middle School. In addition to my teaching responsibilities
at Bay I also serve as an adjunct Professor for the College of
Southern Maryland. |

10:00 AM, 10 JUNE 2009
ON THE MEADOW
Dr. Montessori stressed the vital importance of capturing children’s imagination by creative, hands-on activities connected with their academic curriculum. One of the most fascinating parts of the Upper Elementary program is the annual study of some ancient civilization. The Green Door community has decided to present a brief Roman Army demo to cap off our year-long study of Ancient Rome.
We plan to offer the demo at 10:00 a.m. on the last half-day of school—Wednesday, 10 June. The students & their supporters have been working hard to construct inexpensive but realistic Roman equipment & uniforms—an activity which we have greatly enjoyed.
THE PROGRAM:
The participants will first introduce themselves briefly by their function as part of the Roman 3rd Legion (3rd Cohort, 3rd Century). The program will include a demonstration of Roman archery tactics, use of the pila (javelins), formation of the classic Roman protective “turtle,” & simulated engagement of haybales with the short-sword. Commands will be given in Latin. The soldiers will be available after the demo to answer questions about their gear & tactics & the significance of the army in Roman civilization, and to pose for photographs with friends & family. Anyone who wishes to film the presentation is welcome to do so. (We would appreciate knowing if you have done so & it turned out well: we will probably publish that on the school website for others to enjoy.)
PLEASE JOIN US FOR A HALF-HOUR OF FUN THAT WE HOPE WILL BE MEMORABLE FOR EVERYONE!
